Conversion rate optimisation
Most small businesses are concerned with getting more visitors to their website - via email, affiliates, social media and search engine marketing. These are important, but what do your visitors do when they get there? Do they buy - or wander off without taking any action? As acquiring new visitors becomes more and more expensive, successful businesses will be those that focus on conversation rate optimisation.
What is conversion rate optimisation?
It's simply about finding ways to increase the percentage of visitors that take the desired action on your site. For most sites this is to make an enquiry or to buy a product. This is done in a combination of ways including:
- Adding 'persuasion elements' in the right places
- Split testing pages, headlines, images and calls to action
- User testing and focus groups
- Conducting surveys and implementing the results
- Understanding and using your Analytics data
Does it work?
Yes, any business can improve it's conversion rate - usually between 20% and 200%. Think of it this way, to double your conversion rate you just need to improve your ads, home page, product page and shopping cart by 25% each. To improve your home page by 25% you just need to improve ten things by 2.5% (such as your offer, headline, testimonials or guarantees). It's very achievable.
Cut your PPC budget by half
If you double your conversion rate you can cut your marketing budget by half. Or spend twice as much on AdWords (think of the traffic!). Or start advertising in places you couldn't afford to before.
